Crime fiction has a new kick-ass heroine in Ava Lee, a Chinese-Canadian forensic accountant who packs a serious wallop. Although she is only 5'3" and 115 lbs, she can hold own in most situations - being accomplished in martial arts helps a lot.
Ava is based out of Toronto, but gets to globetrot in pursuit of missing money. The Cdn author Ian Hamilton is quite deft at providing the details that bring these exotic settings to life, as well as integrating those cultural tidbits that make you feel like you are getting a glimpse into another world.
A great mix of character development and pacing, the first two novels in the series provide an engrossing reading experience for crime fans. Although far less violent, the many fans of Stieg Larrson's Lisabeth Salander should find much to enjoy here.
So why not take a chance and place your bets on Ava Lee. Checkout The Water Rat of Wanchai (M) and The Disciple of Las Vegas (M).
