India's largest bookstore chain Crossword recently listed their bestselling titles of 2012. Here are the titles which we have in our collection:
Narcopolis (M)
by Jeet Thayil
"Shuklaji Street, in Old Bombay. In Rashid's opium room the air is thick
and potent. A beautiful young woman leans to hold a long-stemmed pipe
over a flame, her hair falling across her dark eyes. Around her, men
sprawl and mutter in the gloom, each one drifting with his own tide.
Here, people say that you introduce only your worst enemy to opium.
Outside, stray dogs lope in packs. Street vendors hustle. Hookers call
for custom through the bars of their cages as their pimps slouch in
doorways in the half-light. There is an underworld whisper of a new
terror: the Pathar Maar, the stone killer, whose victims are the
nameless, invisible poor. There are too many of them to count in this
broken city." - Publisher
Silent House (M)
by Orhan Pamuk
"In an old mansion in Cennethisar the old widow Fatma awaits the annual summer
visit of her grandchildren: Faruk, a dissipated failed historian; his
sensitive leftist sister, Nilgun; and the younger grandson, Metin, a
high school student drawn to the fast life of the nouveaux riches, who
dreams of going to America. The widow has lived in the village for
decades, ever since her husband, an idealistic young doctor, first
arrived to serve the poor fishermen. Now mostly bedridden, she is
attended by her faithful servant Recep, a dwarf--and the doctor's
illegitimate son. Mistress and servant share memories, and grievances,
of those early years. But it is Recep's cousin Hassan, a high school
dropout, and fervent right-wing nationalist, who will draw the visiting
family into the growing political cataclysm, in this spell-binding novel
depicting Turkey's tumultuous century-long struggle for modernity." - Publisher
The Time Keeper (M)
by Mitch Albom
"After being punished for trying to measure God's greatest gift, Father
Time returns to Earth along with a magical hourglass and a mission: a
chance to redeem himself by teaching two earthly people the true meaning
of time." - Publisher
