Scorpio (October 24- November 22)

This year you have the opportunity to move in new circles of friends and lovers and you may even star in some magical love stories, just be cautious as first impressions are not to be trusted. 2016 is a good time for you to focus on education, either as a formal academic pursuance or simply learning that new craft you’ve been contemplating. Go ahead and revisit the classic back-to-school film,
Billy Madison to get yourself in the mood. You could also head down to your local library and attend a free university-level course.*

You won’t be in the mood to settle this year, so don’t; shake off those social expectations and just roll with the pleasure and punches that come your way. It seems you have a strong desire for openness and sincerity in 2016 and being that dominant powerful Scorpio you are, you’re bound to uncover some buried secrets. Be prepared to handle the fallout. If you’d like, check out
Sebastian Barry’s,
The Secret Scripture
for a pre-game warm-up of sorts.
The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by
Junot Díaz, and
Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by
Jeanette Winterson are both good matches for your year of new people and adventures. And get your feet wet with some educational non-fiction like
Social Psychology : a complete introduction by
Dr. Paul Seager, or
The Story of Science : from the writings of Aristotle to the Big Bang theory by
Susan Wise Bauer. Depending on your schooling choice we might just have the perfect book to kick start your educational pursuits.

Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
It looks as though 2016 will be a transition year for you Sag. Truth be told, transitions can be hard and sometimes it will feel uncomfortable and unfamiliar but trust me, you are built for the challenge. In less daunting news (I think), love will come fast, easy, and frequent this year. Don’t overthink it, don’t try to overcommit, just let your body talk. Interpret that sentence however you’d like. As for your career, it’s time for a change, but it doesn’t look like it’ll come fast and easy, so work hard and take any opportunity that comes your way, big or small, you just don’t know where it will lead. You’re a fire sign, Sag, and if you’ve been working overtime to keep your fire contained, it’s time to let it go. Passion will fuel that creative project you’ve been longing to pour yourself into.

And for some added fun, I challenge you to change your perspective this year Sag. Do something jarring like jump off tall buildings (using ALL the safety precautions), or befriend someone who is completely different than those in your usual social circle. I’m not suggesting you find a new BFF, but simply take the time to listen to someone whose life and social position is different from your own. Or if you’re a shy type with awful vocals, go sing yourself some, Cameron Diaz in My Best Friend’s Wedding-style karaoke. Don’t know what I’m talking about, we have the
DVD.

As for books that will comfort, distract, support, and inspire you this year, why not check out,
Stranger Than We Can Imagine : an alternative history of the 20th century by
John Higgs,
Seraphina by
Rachel Hartman, The Dew Breaker by
Edwidge Danticat, and
Americanah by
Chimamanda Adichie.
